London: bakeries & cafes you must try

I love London. I love all the neighbourhoods which are so different from each other. I love the endless amount of good bakeries, restaurants, cafes and bars. I love all the vintage- and food markets. I love the view of the red buses, giving the grey streets some colour on a rainy day. I just love London and I hope you do too! If not, you may need to give it another try and pay a visit to the places below.

The Dusty Knuckle Bakery

You won’t run into The Dusty Knuckle Bakery by accident, as it’s not that easy to find. It’s located at the end of a pretty dodgy looking street, but don’t let this scare you off. I mean, it even has an outside terrace! But don’t worry, there are also tables inside for the more typical English-weather-days. The bakery has an industrial vibe and is enormous. Or maybe it’s because the whole bakery is open and in other bakeries I usually don’t see what’s happening behind the scene. Anyhow, they have an amazing variety of sweet and savoury pastries available and the bread looked and smelled very delicious as well. I would have bought a bread but just didn’t feel like walking around with a bread in my bag all day, you know? Ok, so I forgot the exact names of the things we tried, but I remember the muffin with apricot and dates was the best.

Buns from Home

Buns from home is more of a pastry shop than a bakery, but it’s epic, so I included it in this list anyway. They are known for their hand rolled cinnamon buns, but they have all kinds of variations. As you may know, I’m really bad at making decisions, especially when it comes to food. So I had no choice but to take a couple of flavours. There are several locations across London, so I’m sure you will be able to find one during your visit.

24 Karak

I noticed 24 Karak on Maps when searching the area for nice food and drink spots near Brick Lane. Google Maps is my best friend when it comes to doing research for a trip. Karak 24 triggered me because I used to drink Karak Chai back in Abu Dhabi and I haven’t found a nice place that sells it in the Netherlands. It was so lovely to have a good Karak tea here! Although I personally prefer the original one, they do offer a vegan version with oat milk. The place is small, but there are a few seating places to enjoy your Karak tea or one of their sweet or savoury snacks.

Crosstown Doughnuts (Spitalfields)

The doughnuts from Crosstown are simply delicious. Interesting options of flavours and not too heavy. They have several branches, but we got ours from the one in Spitalfields. It’s kind of a food-truck, so no direct seating options, but in Spitalfields there are several shared tables available.

Conscience Kitchen

Coffee, tea, wine, cocktails, they have it all and they do it well! This place is cozy and the staff is super welcoming! They also do food, but we didn’t try any since we just had a Venezuelan arepa at the Portobello market. Also very good and worth a try!

Camden Tea bar

Surprisingly, this tea bar is located in Camden. I didn’t expect much of it but it’s really nice! The number of tea flavours they have is insane. Of course this was another struggle for me, so I went with the recommendation of the lady working there. Luckily it was a good one! Besides having a tea sitting down in the cafe, you can also buy different types of tea to take home.

Feya

You should definitely visit Feya if you enjoy insta-worthy cafes. The coffee was not bad and my smoothie bowl was also fine, but not spectacular. I have to admit though, the cakes looked very appealing and in general the interior and the food looks adorable.

Jolene Redchurch street

This is a very cute place, which I really wanted to visit. Unfortunately, it didn’t fit in our schedule and once we were nearby we had just eaten something. This place is supposed to have good coffees so try it out and let me know how it was! Or if you’ve been already, I’d love to hear about your experience.

Bagel Bake Brick Lane

Less is more is what this place stands for. Simple, affordable bagels with only a few ingredients, but so good. It’s often very busy but they work very efficiently so it goes pretty fast. Another plus is that this place is open 24 hours, so it’s perfect for a late night snack after a couple of drinks.

Of course it’s possible to visit these gems yourself, but London has countless of epic food spots and sometimes it’s hard to decide where to go. Withlocals has several food experiences that gives you the opportunity to try different delicacies with a local!
