Who is Travelbecks?

Travelbecks comes from Rebecca, often called Becks by friends, who happens to be a passionate traveler. As a kid I already traveled a lot with my parents and I’ve always been curious about everything around me. I am a former flight attendant from the Netherlands, also known as Holland. Other Dutch travellers might recognise the phenomenon that quite a lot of foreigners have never heard of the Netherlands or even Holland, until you mention ‘AMSTERDAM’. “Aaah Amsterdam, the place where you can smoke weed”…right. Well, there is more than that, much more actually!

Traveling solo

My first time traveling solo was in 2012 when I traveled to San Diego for a Cambridge English course. Although, I was only 17 I had the time of my life. During my studies I had the opportunity to do a 6 months internship in Buenos Aires, a city that still has my heart. Then during my last year I obviously took the last opportunity to travel during my studies. I traveled to Panama for a month to conduct research on the indigenous Kuna community. A very intense and unique experience.

Moving to Ireland

After I graduated with my Bachelor Degree in Tourism Management in 2015, I worked at a Dutch travel agency for a few months. I then quit my job to follow my heart and moved to Dublin in Ireland,  to start a new adventure. Before really moving I travelled with a friend through Malaysia and Thailand for a month.

Moving to the UAE

This adventure didn’t last for long, as I realised the office life was not for me at that time. About 6 months later I kind of spontaneously applied for a job as a flight attendant for Etihad Airways. Somehow I got accepted and a few months later I packed my bags again to move to the desert of the United Arab Emirates. Abu Dhabi was my home base for 3,5 years until COVID hit. I suddenly had to pack my life into a couple of suitcases again and move back to the Netherlands. It’s not really possible to live in the UAE when you don’t have a visa and for a visa you need a sponsor (employer or spouse).

Back to the Netherlands

End of August 2020 I moved back to the Netherlands and started a 9 to 5 office job. My life changed completely so it took quite some time to adjust. And to be honest, I don’t think I fully adjusted yet. Once you are used to the freedom and the lifestyle there, it’s quite hard to go back to anything else. I am currently living in Amsterdam with my Tunisian boyfriend who I took with my as a souvenir from Abu Dhabi. We are trying to explore the Netherlands and nearby places while we’re still living here..

Where it all started

I initially started this blog to have a place to share my adventures and experiences with friends and family abroad. I also wanted to be able to have my stories in one place so I wouldn’t forget about everything I have experienced. Nowadays, I am also sharing tips and recommendations on what to see/do, best places to eat and other do’s/don’ts. Hopefully it will inspire you to travel the world and make the most out of your life!
