Amsterdam: cute cafes & good coffee spots

The many cute cafes are one of the many things I love about Amsterdam. A good coffee in a nice spot can even fix a rainy day (to a certain extent). That is why I really enjoy trying new coffee spots in Amsterdam. Luckily, there are lots of decent cafes, and new ones open continuously so I will probably never be able to try them all. To save you some time, I have created a list so you can just pin them to your map and try them yourself!

This list of coffee places is in random order and organised by neighbourhood.

Pijp

Liev Coffee & Pastry

Just a really lovely place for a coffee or chai with a nice pastry. According to the staff their Cinnamon Bun was most popular so I clearly had to see what the fuss was all about. And I must say, it was pretty good. Not the absolute best ever, but definitely good! I did really like their special Chai though!

Other cafes I really enjoyed in de Pijp:

  • LOCALS Specialty Coffee
  • Coffee & Coconuts
  • Badeta Koffiebranders

Centrum and 9 straatjes/9 streets

Although there aren’t as many great spots in the centre of Amsterdam as in other areas, there are certainly a few you may want to save.

Bakkerij Wolf

Known for their pastries and breakfast items, but their coffee ain’t too bad either! You can either sit down if you’re lucky enough to find a table or get something from their take-away counter. Especially when the weather is good, it’s lovely to grab a coffee + croissant and continue your stroll along the pretty canals.

Other places to visit

  • De Bakkerswinkel
  • De Laatste Kruimel
  • Chun Café (Bubble tea and famous sandwiches)

Jordaan + Haarlemmerdijk area

Toki

This cafe is pretty hyped, so expect to find queues, especially in the weekend. However, the coffee is decent and the banana bread and their other cake (something with chocolate) are really yummi! So it’s worth the wait 🙂

Luuk’s Coffee Noordermarkt

I am in love with the overal look and colours of Luuks’s Coffee. The blue and wood are perfect together. Tried an oat cappuccino which I liked! Besides coffee they sell a couple of pastries. I haven’t tried them yet but they looked appealing.

More cafes to try in the Jordaan + Haarlemmerdijk area:

  • Good Beans
  • Drupa Coffee Roasters
  • Bruno’s Amsterdam
  • SAINT-JEAN; don’t leave this place without one of their pastries, but be prepared to wait
  • NU Koffie & Delicatessen
  • Kafenion

Amsterdam Noord (North)

As we are living in Amsterdam Noord, we love to go for a walk and find new gems! You sometimes need to know where you’re going, but Noord has a lot to offer and the vibe is different from other areas in the city.

Zithoek

Zithoek is a small living-room style cafe on the corner across Dirk supermarket. It’s within walking distance of the Noorderpark metro station and ferry station IJplein and worth a visit! Their coffee is great and their pastries always look good as well. We tried the cookie and loved it! There are a couple of seats inside and a few vintage stools and tables outside. Not like a full on terrace, but it’s a nice place to sit down and enjoy your coffee.

Noorderlicht Café

Not specifically a coffee place, but it’s just a cool spot to visit when you’re in Noord. Noorderlicht is built in a converted greenhouse and has a bohemian vibe. They serve good coffee, and their large terrace provides a lovely view of the water. Also great to combine with a visit to the IJ-hallen market.

Broodbakkerij Ex

Coffee , pastries and fantastic (sourdough) bread. It’s not cheap, but good quality products! This is not much of a secret anymore so be prepared for a little wait if you go on Saturday morning. Broodbakkerij Ex is more of a take-away spot than an actual cafe. Luckily Noorderpark is around the corner so go for a walk and enjoy the fresh air while you sip your coffee. I read that their temporarily closed at the moment (Sept 2023), so make sure to check before you go.

More cafes in Noord:

  • Liever Hier, a bit further, but a nice bike ride!
  • Boka’s Koffiebar
  • De VerbroederIJ, not specifically for coffee, but great spot to hang out.
  • Kometen Brood Cafe
  • Café de Ceuvel, nice terrace near the water

Amsterdam West

Cafecito coffee bar

Aesthetically pleasing coffee spot, with minimal design and just a very nice interior. Really enjoyed sipping my coffee here.

Monks Coffee Roasters

Perfectly located on the busy Bilderdijkstraat this place offers very decent coffee and it’s quite spacious inside. Besides coffee, they have a breakfast menu with plenty of tasty options.

Coffee Room

Not too fancy, just a good old cafe with coffees, teas and various cakes. Oh and more importantly a nice terrace outside, partly overlooking the canal. This is one of the few cafes that’s open till 7PM (that I know of). Usually the good coffee spots close around 5PM or even earlier, a real shame.

Ao Bar

Very cute cafe with some Japanese influences. Good coffee and a nice spot to enjoy the morning sun. Don’t be shy and try their cakes and/or cookies!

More cafes to try in Amsterdam West:

  • LOT61
  • Kanarie Club, unique and spacious interior.
  • Five Ways Coffee Roasters

Amsterdam Oost/East

Bam Boa

Bam Boa is a stunning boho-style cafe which gave me bali vibes a bit. A big plus is their lovely terrace overlooking the Amstel river. They do brunch and dinner but we’ve only tried their coffee and a passion fruit dessert. Coffee was good but would not recommend the passionfruit tart.

Other cafes in Amsterdam East:

  • De jonge admiraal–> cakes
  • Motion Coffee
  • YUSU
  • Superette cafe –> bagels
  • The Cottage –> Sunday Roast
  • Coffee Bru (multiple locations)

If you don’t have a plan and wish to explore the hidden gems as well as highlights of Amsterdam, withlocals offers a very nice concept of small scale (private) tours. They also have specific foodie tours where you get the chance to try different local delicacies. Although there is plenty to see in Amsterdam, you should definitely explore the region around Amsterdam. There are lots of cute villages and the infamous windmills.

I will probably continue to add more cafes to this list, so don’t hesitate to come back now and then 😉

Public Transportation in Amsterdam

Amsterdam has plenty of options to get around. I personally prefer the metro, but this doesn’t bring you everywhere. Alternatives are trams, buses or of course, a good old bicycle! Some useful apps for public transportation in the Netherlands:

If you travel from Amsterdam to other cities in the Netherlands, consider taking the train or bus. There are lots of connections with good prices!
